Fats, oils and grease (FOG) are problematic for sewer systems – they can disrupt how the system functions and result in unnecessary and disruptive maintenance. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s SFGreasecycle was developed in 2007 with the intention of diverting FOG from city’s sewer infrastructure while addressing the market gap of residents and Food Service Establishments not having cost effective options to dispose of their used cooking oil. The collected used cooking oil is converted into a local source of sustainable biofuel. This biofuel helps California diesel fleets offset their carbon emissions from fossil fuels.
