Every day, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) delivers high-quality water, generates clean energy, and protects public health and the environment by collecting and treating wastewater for the residents and businesses of San Francisco. Our system works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and its operation and maintenance are funded by water and sewer rates. Nationwide, utilities are grappling with the problem of aging infrastructure. The longer these upgrades are delayed, the more expensive they become. We raise rates when necessary to cover our operating and capital costs in order to keep our services reliable and infrastructure in a state of good repair. Ratepayers fund critical water and sewer infrastructure projects. We are nearing completion of the $4.8 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP), one of the largest water infrastructure programs in the nation. The WSIP has strengthened our Hetch Hetchy Regional Water System. Completion of several large regional water construction projects has created a seismically robust water lifeline for 2.7 million Bay Area residents. Ratepayer dollars have funded our ability to provide high-quality, reliable drinking water. We are also focusing on another foundation of our City: our sewer system. With aging sewer pipelines and treatment plants, San Francisco’s future relies on upgrading this system. Our Sewer System Improvement Program will ensure continued protection of public health and the environment.
